Creative Juices – by Tricia Hague-Barrett
Have you ever wondered where the ideas come from when you suddenly have a great idea for a painting or design, a poster, or artwork, be it a new pattern for a knitting project, or some other medium, one that you seem to be able to design yourself out of thin air? I would like to share some of my thoughts on this topic. Before I do however, I have a fascination with chains and prisons, and many of my works are symbolic of that. The prison of self has always intrigued me, so I have painted these in their many forms. [Sorry, I digress]
`Abdu’l-Bahá tells us that the next world is within this world. Let me find that quote:
“Those souls who are pure and unsullied, upon the dissolution of their elemental frames, hasten away to the world of God, and that world is within this world. The people of this world, however, are unaware of that world, and are even as the mineral and the vegetable that know nothing of the world of the animal and the world of man.”
(`Abdu’l-Bahá, Selections from the Writings of `Abdu’l-Bahà, p. 194)
and again He tells us:
The Other World is Within this World
“… The answer to the first question: the souls of the children of the Kingdom after their separation from the body, ascend unto the realm of everlasting life. But if ye ask as to the place, know ye that the world of existence is a single world, although its stations are various and distinct. For example, the mineral life occupieth its own plain, but a mineral entity is without any awareness at all of the vegetable kingdom…”(Compilations, Lights of Guidance, p. 206)
And once again:
Influence Of Holy and Spiritual Souls
“As to the question that the holy and spiritual souls influence, help and guide the creatures after they have cast off this elemental mould-this is an established truth of the Bahá’ís…”
(Compilations, Lights of Guidance, p. 206)
Sometimes artists or writers will say, “I have writers block” or “I am not feeling very inspired right now”. An artist may pick up a brand new canvas, and stare at it for ages, and still not put the paintbrush into the paint. Someone else may pick up a pen, and nothing comes to mind. I love these times. It seems to me that I never get that blocked that I cannot do something at least. That’s possibly because I have so many fingers in so many pies so to speak. I love creating pottery, sculpturing, sketching, designing, painting, and photography, as well as writing, singing, chanting, and I am into “metaphorical painting” as I like to call it. (Abstract in most peoples books.) Because I can move from one style into another, it is not so hard for me to imagine that someone who has passed on from this earthly plain, is helping me by putting new ideas into my head. I therefore cannot attribute these ideas to myself. The idea may have come to mind, but it was not my thought processes that created it. What comes next is probably needed by some person who may get to see it. It may effect them profoundly. I also feel that the next world being a far more powerful world than this one, allows for ideas to come into this world quite easily. I also believe that every person is influenced by this spiritual dimension at some time in their lives.
Sometimes a quote will come to mind while aiming my camera at a flower, so I take the shot so that the quote can fit in the picture. This happens a lot to me.
How many times have I been to a gallery, seen some fantastic works of other artists and thought to myself, in my own egotistical way, “Hey, I could do that too,” Only to find on coming home, picking up the paint brush, that my application of the same type of thing does not work out. “It will never be as lovely as the one I saw” I say to myself. Have you ever wondered why designs and concepts of other peoples sometimes seem to be ‘otherworldly’?
I have also heard it said by many artists that they are not good artists. However, if we learn “the how to use” (the brushes, techniques, and tools,) we can be ready to bring to life the ideas from the next world into this one. Oh well, back to the proverbial blank canvas again, to stand silently in expectation. While waiting, I shall try sketching with my left hand, that always gets my creative juices running.
